People Pleasing - why we say yes when we really want to say no
Self-sabotage and the hidden benefits
Every December, usually after Boxing Day and just before the start of the New Year, many people start setting their goals, intentions, and what they want to achieve or attract in the following year. These plans fill us with positivity, excitement, and a firm conviction that everything we long for is just at our fingertips. All we have to do is stay focused and apply some self-discipline, and all these goals will be realized.
January 1st rolls in, and we’re filled with an inner excitement that this year is going to be different from the previous years. It starts great. We do all the things that we promised ourselves. We changed our diet and stopped eating junk food, we started a modest exercise routine, and we haven’t had a cigarette in almost a week.
We start looking and feeling better, and we start feeling excited. We keep going, and after a few weeks, we feel like winners.
But then something happens….
Sometimes it’s an obvious incident or event that has caused us stress. But other times, you are left scratching your head in confusion.
You have a relapse and switch back to your old behaviour. You binged and ate a whole block of chocolate, couldn’t be bothered working out, or you had a smoke when you went out with your friends.
What happened? You were doing so well. Now you feel guilty, weak, hopeless, and angry at yourself. You shrug your shoulders and feel defeated. You give up these plans and go back to your normal routines. You figure it’s just easier, and you’ll try again at a future date.
You self-sabotaged.
But why? Why would you spoil the chance at achieving something that you really wanted to happen?
You self-sabotaged your goals for a specific but unconscious reason or reasons.
Let me explain…
Your addictions, excess weight, procrastination, unwanted behaviours, and habits are serving a purpose for you. There is an unconscious need to keep them or hang on to these problems. You aren’t deliberately trying to hurt or stop yourself from achieving. You are holding on to them because they benefit you in some way. The problem is that most of us are unaware of these reasons because they are subconscious or below our level of consciousness.
I will give you an example. Let’s say you want to lose weight. You know all the reasons why you want to lose the weight. We will call them the upsides or the advantages of losing weight. If that were all that we had to focus on, weight loss would be simple, right?
Wrong! What we need to focus on is all the DISadvantages to losing weight. This takes some detailed and honest self-enquiry.
Here are some possible negative reasons (suggestions only) of why you might be self-sabotaging weight loss. You may have very different reasons to these suggestions.
I will be seen (I don’t want to be visible)
I will attract unwanted attention
People might get jealous
I don’t know who I am as a thin person
I will have to spend money on new clothes
Until you address the subconscious reasons why you keep sabotaging your own success, it will make your goals almost impossible to achieve. Your subconscious mind is the primary driver of your core beliefs. Its job is to protect you and keep you safe at all times. This is exactly what it is doing when you self-sabotage.
The good news is that you haven’t done anything wrong. Hooray!
All it takes is some re-wiring of your thoughts and beliefs, and all your goals will become achievable.
